Accessibility and cookie check for hotels and holiday rentals

When guests book and pay directly on your website, they conclude a contract online. The accessibility rules can then matter for your booking flow, even if the booking engine comes from a vendor.

What we see most often with hotels and holiday rentals

  • Booking engines in embedded frames without a title, with date pickers that only work with a mouse
  • Image galleries and sliders that move on their own and cannot be paused
  • Room photos without alternative text
  • Google Maps and YouTube embeds that transfer data before consent
  • Review widgets with weak contrast

Does the accessibility law apply to you?

The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) covers, among other things, e-commerce services offered to consumers. Each EU country has its own implementing law, scope details and authority; in Germany it is the BFSG. Micro-enterprises providing services are usually exempt. Check your case with a lawyer in your country.

Separately, in the EU, storing or reading information on a visitor's device, for example with tracking cookies, generally requires prior consent (Art. 5(3) ePrivacy Directive). CheckEAA checks both in one scan, and it also clicks reject in your cookie banner to see what still loads afterwards.

Our tip

Ask your booking engine vendor about their accessibility status. We show you which issues come from the embedded part.
