Accessibility and cookie check for trades and craft businesses
Many trades businesses have fewer than ten employees and, as micro-enterprises providing services, are usually exempt from the accessibility requirements. The cookie check concerns every business, though, and an easy-to-use site brings more enquiries.

What we see most often with trades and craft businesses
- Before-and-after galleries without alternative text
- WhatsApp and chat buttons without an accessible name
- Phone numbers shown as an image instead of text
- Google Maps, YouTube and review widgets loading before consent
- Contact forms that are hard to use on a phone
Does the accessibility law apply to you?
The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) covers, among other things, e-commerce services offered to consumers. Each EU country has its own implementing law, scope details and authority; in Germany it is the BFSG. Micro-enterprises providing services are usually exempt. Check your case with a lawyer in your country.
Separately, in the EU, storing or reading information on a visitor's device, for example with tracking cookies, generally requires prior consent (Art. 5(3) ePrivacy Directive). CheckEAA checks both in one scan, and it also clicks reject in your cookie banner to see what still loads afterwards.
Our tip
Start with the cookie result. Fixes there are usually quick, often a single setting in your website builder.
