Accessibility and cookie check for online shops

Online shops that sell to consumers are among the clearest cases under the European Accessibility Act, because the purchase contract is concluded directly on the website.

What we see most often with online shops

  • Product images without alternative text, so screen readers read out file names
  • Filters, colour pickers and quantity fields that do not work with the keyboard
  • Checkout fields without labels and errors shown only in red
  • Price and discount text with too little contrast
  • Meta Pixel, Google Ads or TikTok loading before consent

Does the accessibility law apply to you?

The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) covers, among other things, e-commerce services offered to consumers. Each EU country has its own implementing law, scope details and authority; in Germany it is the BFSG. Micro-enterprises providing services are usually exempt. Check your case with a lawyer in your country.

Separately, in the EU, storing or reading information on a visitor's device, for example with tracking cookies, generally requires prior consent (Art. 5(3) ePrivacy Directive). CheckEAA checks both in one scan, and it also clicks reject in your cookie banner to see what still loads afterwards.

Our tip

Do not test only the home page. A Pro or Agency plan also scans product, category and cart pages through your sitemap.
